Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (15 June 2012)

On Friday and Saturday of this week, the Church throughout the world celebrates the Hearts of Jesus and Mary. We usually speak of them as “the Sacred Heart” and “the Immaculate Heart” and together they bear witness to God’s love for this human race of ours.

In the preface of the Mass in honor of the Heart of Jesus, we find these words: Raised high on the cross, he gave himself up for us with a wonderful love and poured out blood and water from his pierced side, the wellspring of the Church’s sacraments, so that, won over to the open heart of the Savior, all might draw water joyfully from the springs of salvation.  To St. Margaret Mary to whom he appeared back in the 17th century, Our Lord said, “Behold this heart which has so loved men and has been so little loved in return.”

And, as a setting for the jewel of Christ, God fashioned a woman with a heart filled with love for Christ who would be her son, and for all those whom he loved and loves.  These two hearts–of Jesus and of Mary–are precious beyond measure to us who are members of the community of love which we call “the Church” and the “mystical Body of Christ.”

Let us try to express by our gratitude and our affection how we feel about these two hearts, and allow them to move us to love them more and more all the days of our lives. Thank you for seeking God’s truth. God bless you.  Father Victor Brown, O.P.
