Feast of the Birth of Saint Mary (8 Sept 2012)

The 8th of September is the feast of the birth of Our Blessed Mother.  It falls on Saturday this year.  It belongs to a special category of liturgical feasts, because it is one of the only three feasts which we celebrate in honor of the BIRTH of a heavenly personage.  We have the birthday of Our Divine Lord on December 25; the birthday of Saint John the Baptist on June 24, and now the birthday of the Mother of Our Lord on September 8.

Why these special days?  It is because these three persons were born in the state of grace.  Christ Our Lord is the very source of grace itself and therefore is filled with God’s grace at every moment of his existence.  Saint John the Baptist was sanctified in his mother’s womb when Our Lady came to visit her and the unborn child leaped in his mother’s body.  And then Our Lady was conceived without sin—we speak of this great gift as her Immaculate Conception.  So, nine months after her conception, she was born “full of grace.”  Our liturgical calendar reflects these mysteries of faith by celebrating her conception on December eighth, and her birth on September eighth.  Therefore, let us rejoice in a very special way this Saturday and weekend as we welcome the birth of this little girl into our world—this little girl who was to become the Mother of God, the queen of angels, and our queen as well.  Thank you for seeking God’s truth. God bless you all! Father Victor Brown, O.P.
