Feast of Saint Paul Miki & Companions (6 Feb 2013)

I come to compose this daily message on February 6, just after concelebrating Mass with one of the other priests here in our priory. Earlier in the morning, I went down to our kitchen to make coffee and then outside to bring in the morning paper. What a contrast there is between the morning paper and the readings at Mass! The first reading for today’s Mass is taken from the Letter to the Hebrews. In it, the Holy Spirit tells us: “Let marriage be honored among all, and the marriage bed be kept undefiled, for God will judge the immoral and adulterers.” And in the gospel, we find Saint John the Baptist saying to the adulterous and incestuous King Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”

From those sober and yet beautifully noble sentiments we turn to the morning paper and see what the Hollywood set, or the “beautiful people” are doing these days in terms of marriage, the marriage bed, their sexuality, their children—born or unborn—and the whole gamut of human reproduction and education. And that goes on not just today, February 6, but every day as our culture becomes more pagan, more alienated from Christ Our Lord.

But all is not lost. This Christmas I received a number of family newsletters and photographs of beautiful children describing the fine young families which a number of my young friends are raising. In one case, the eldest boy has already enrolled in their local seminary, and another boy is studying in a church-operated college in Rome and may also wind up preparing for the priesthood. Just because our headlines yell at us: LOOK—it’s scandalous and sexy—and therefore newsworthy and interesting—that doesn’t make it so. And that certainly doesn’t make the people who live that way exciting or interesting or worthy of imitation or admiration.

The pretty faces in the tabloids are NOT the heroes and models of our American society today. We’d be in terrible shape if they were. Let’s go back to Hebrews: “Let marriage be honored among all.” You can’t find better advice to give to society and to preach to your children by word but especially by example. Thank you for seeking God’s truth. God bless you. Father Victor Brown, O.P.

Note:  Father Brown composed this message some years ago.
