Good Friday (29 March 2013)

As I write this message, it is Good Friday—the beginning of the greatest weekend of our Church year. During those three days in the life, death, and risen life of our Divine Lord, he suffered, died, revealed to those awaiting their entrance into heaven that they would soon be with him there, then rose from the dead and reanimated the faith, hope, and commitment of his followers on earth who had been so saddened by his death.

This is the one day of the year when the holy Sacrifice of the Mass is not offered in our churches and chapels, because it is the commemoration of the day when Jesus died. Rather, we can, if we wish, receive Holy Communion in which we are given a sacred host consecrated previously.  There are no religious services for Holy Saturday, when we recall the body of Jesus lying, dead, in the tomb. But that night, we begin the exultant celebration of his resurrection which has filled the Christian world with joy for two thousand years, and will continue to do so until the end of time.

In the days ahead, I hope to devote this daily message to the various aspects of these supreme days. For the moment, however, let me simply wish you a most joyous Easter, that you may come to know and understand better the great solemnity of Easter, that you will appreciate more deeply what Jesus has done for us, and therefore celebrate it with greater fervor.  Let us all salute our triumphant Lord with the ancient cry of joy: Christ conquers! Christ rules! Christ commands!  Thank you for seeking God’s truth. God bless you. Father Victor Brown, O.P.

Note:  Father Brown composed this message some years ago.
