Feast of Saint Barbara (4 December 2013)

When Christ Our Lord came into our world, our race, our history, and our time, he did so as an embryo, a fetus, an infant, and a growing child. And so, as we celebrate Advent, we have today in the gospel of the Mass these words of Our Lord: I give you praise, Father, for you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned and have revealed them to the childlike. Our Lord wants us to be like children. In the first reading of our Mass today, taken from the prophet Isaiah, chapter 11, Sacred Scripture speaks of small, new, young things. A shoot, a bud, a lamb, the kid goat, the calf and young lion; a little child to lead them. A baby.

Who is childlike? The person who combats our own innate pride, selfishness, antagonism toward others, contempt for those we think are inferior to ourselves. The one who is simple, humble, little. The one who is like the Lord who, upon coming into the world which he had made, had to be laid in a manger where animals eat because there was no room in the inn. “Away in a manager, no crib for a bed, the little Lord Jesus lay down his sweet head.” Thank you for seeking God’s truth. God bless you. Father Victor Brown, O.P.

Note:  This is a CDM composed by Father Brown in the past.
