Feast of Saint Matthias (14 May 2014)

Today we celebrate the feast of Saint Matthias, the apostle who took the place of Judas to revert to twelve the number of the first bishops of the Church, the twelve apostles. In the liturgy of this day, we hear again and again the words of Jesus: you have not chosen me; I have chosen you.

I would ask you to think of these divine words in your own life. Our Lord has chosen you to be a Christian, a Catholic, possibly a religious or a priest. If he chooses us for some particular role in his mystical body, then he gives us the grace to fulfill that role. Are you a father or a mother? A husband or a wife? A religious sister or brother or a priest? Are you a housewife or businessman or professional servant of the human family—physician, dentist, lawyer, counselor, engineer, teacher, scientist, artist? If so, it is because God has given you the interest, the desire, and the talents to pursue those roles, those vocations.

Let us—each of us—say to our divine Savior, “Lord, you have chosen me for this place in life, for this role in human society. Let me treasure this choice that you have made of me. Let me do my best to serve you in this role for which you have chosen me. As the painter chooses the brush with which to paint this portrait or landscape; as the sculptor chooses the chisel for this statue; as the composer chooses the instrument for this passage in his symphony or opera, or this voice for this solo, let me serve my divine Artist the best I can as the brush, the chisel, the musical instrument or voice in contributing to the beauty or value of the product. Thank you for choosing me, Lord; I will try not to disappoint you. Thank you for seeking God’s truth, God Bless you, Father Victor Brown, O.P.
