[Tomorrow on September 12,] we may celebrate the Holy Name of Mary. It is a very significant day, because it commemorates the fact that the forces of Islam were turned away from their attempts to invade Europe from the east at the gates of the city of Vienna, the capital of Austria. Nearly a thousand years before, they had invaded Spain and Portugal and crossed the Pyrenees to penetrate into the rest of western Europe. But they were defeated in mid-France, and were pushed back across the mountains into Spain and Portugal where they remained here and there until 1492, when Ferdinand and Isabella finally drove them totally out of the Iberian peninsula.
Nearly 100 years later, they tried to invade Europe by sea, but were defeated at the battle of Lepanto, and then after another century, they tried to invade eastern Europe and were defeated at Vienna. As the battle of Lepanto was being anticipated by Christian Europe, Pope Saint Pius V asked the people of Rome to invoke Our Blessed Mother with the Rosary for deliverance from the Muslims. And, because that deliverance came at Lepanto on October 7, 1571, the Church instituted the feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary on that date. Then, because the people of Vienna invoked the Holy Name of Mary in their struggle against their enemies in 1683 and their prayers were answered at Vienna on September 12, 1683, this date has been associated with Our Lady and her holy name. Thus we have three liturgical celebrations each year having to do with Our Lady’s relationship with Islam: October 7 — the battle of Lepanto; September 12 — Vienna; and then May 13 — the apparition of our Lady at Fatima, a name given to that place in Portugal by the Muslims in honor of one of Mohammed’s daughters by that name.
So now, as I have mentioned before, our job is to mount a massive campaign of prayer throughout the entire Church for the conversion of Islam and the pacification of its more militant, terroristic elements. The 9/11 tragedy was the work of Muslim terrorists; today we ask the Mother of Christ, Queen of Peace, who is mentioned in the Koran, their holy book, to bring them to Jesus her son and turn our traditional enemies into friends and brothers. Thank you for seeking God’s truth. God Bless you. Father Victor Brown, O.P.
