Comm. of Blessed Alvaro of Cordova (19 February 2016)

Beginning about 1960 for a number of reasons, we Catholics have lived through a tragic series of events having to do with religious education not only in this country but throughout the world. At the bottom of it all, it seems, was the itch to change, to embrace novelty, to reject the traditional, the tried and true, and to try all sorts of new ideas, new approaches, new philosophies.

We are paying for those mistakes now. Many thousands of priests and religious have renounced their vows and left the service of the Church and specifically of religious education. Many others have given up the religious observances which have been of great service to the Church in the past, and opted to live like laypersons, thus depriving themselves of much of their educational value. The ugliness of feminism, whereby so many nuns and sisters have become angry and embittered because they cannot be ordained to the priesthood, has damaged the community of faith.

Rather than dwell upon these sad events, however, let’s be aware that we seem to be turning a corner in this very unfortunate story. A number of new religious congregations have sprung up recently which are totally loyal to the Church, the Holy See, the Pope, and their local bishops, and who really want to teach the authentic doctrine of the Church in their various ministries. We now have in this country a number of small very excellent colleges and universities which are what Catholic colleges ought to be — primarily concerned with the salvation of the souls of their students, with total conformity to the new Catechism of the Catholic Church, with the statements of Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI, and with the charisms of so many of our founders of religious traditions down through the ages like Benedict, Dominic, Francis, Teresa of Avila, Madeleine Sophie Barat, Francis de Sales, John Baptist de la Salle, John Bosco.

We have the almost incredible history of the Eternal Word Television Network, founded by a cloistered Poor Clare Nun, Mother Angelica, which is reaching millions each day, is totally loyal to the Church and is bringing excellent speakers into the homes of its watchers and listeners.

These are exciting times; let us reject the bad and embrace the good, and let us be part of this groundswell of evangelization by our prayers for the ongoing educational effort of the Church. We must keep before our minds always the words of Jesus: “Go, therefore, make disciples of all nations.” Thank you for seeking God’s truth.  God bless you.  Father Victor Brown, O.P.
