In the book of Genesis we read about creation and the fall of man. We see that Satan assumed the form of a snake and tempted our mother Eve by telling her that God is a liar and his word is not to be believed. So Eve believed Satan rather than God, and persuaded her husband to do the same. They ate the forbidden fruit, and thus brought penalties upon themselves and their progeny.
Today, the sad story of moral evil continues its downhill spiral in the second human generation, when Cain, envious of his brother Abel, kills him. When God asks Cain, “Where is your brother?”, Cain answers with a lie—a very impudent lie—and says to God, “I don’t know. Am I my brother’s keeper?” And God continues: “What have you done? Listen: your brother’s blood cries out to me from the soil.”
The ears of God are being terribly assaulted these days by much crying out of innocent blood like that of Abel. Think of the unjustified wars and violence and terrorism that are committed nowadays. Think of the millions of babies aborted each year by Planned Parenthood and other industries of butchery like that.
The answer to Cain’s insolent question: Am I my brother’s keeper? is a thunderous YES: YOU ARE YOUR BROTHER’S KEEPER!!! You shall not kill. On the contrary, you shall love your neighbor, especially your brother and your sister, as yourself. But if you heed the lies of Satan, the father of lies, then you will be led along the way begun by Adam and Eve and their son Cain.
Rather, let us follow the lead of our divine Savior who comes into the world saying, “I come to do your will, O God.” And of his holy mother who says, “Be it done to me according to your word.” Thank you for seeking God’s truth. God bless you. Father Victor Brown, O.P.
